Resin Bound Gravel Driveway—Cost, Advantages & Disadvantages

P&M Kelly Block Paving • March 31, 2025

Resin and aggregates combine in a forced-action mixer to form a Resin Bound Gravel Driveway. The aggregates and resin are trowelled onto the surface to create a flat and smooth finish.

You may be familiar with the term ‘Stone Carpet,’ which is often used instead of resin-bound gravel paths. The seamless finish results in an ornate resin stone driveway that is striking, long-lasting, and solid.

Resin-bound gravel paths are permeable because the resin binds the aggregates in such a way that small gaps are formed, allowing water molecules to pass through. This makes it a SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) compliant solution. Once you install a resin-bound driveway, you do not need planning permission, as long as a suitable porous sub-base is used.

If you want a beautiful resin stone driveway, it can be laid over existing tarmac, concrete, pathways, or car parks.

Resin Bonded Gravel Driveway

Please note that there is only a difference of one letter, "O," between bonded and bound resin paths. However, this distinction is significant.

A Gravel Bonded Driveway is created by applying resin to the base and then scattering the aggregates onto it. In this technique, some aggregates bond with the resin while others remain loose, making them easy to replace or move. Unlike resin-bound gravel driveways, the bonded system restricts water passage. Because the aggregates are spread over the entire resin surface, it becomes water-impermeable. It is not porous, so it cannot be used as a SUDS-compliant solution.

Resin Bound Gravel Driveway Cost per m²

The price of a resin stone driveway depends on several factors, including shape, size, type of resin, type of aggregates, weather conditions, area, and labour.

As a general guide, resin-bound gravel paths cost around £50–£80 per m². This estimate does not include base preparation. However, please note that the cost is approximate and can vary depending on your region and the factors mentioned above.

Factors Affecting the Cost of a Resin Bound Gravel Driveway

Before planning your installation, let’s take a detailed look at the factors that influence the cost of a resin stone driveway. This will help you determine the best materials and conditions for your project.

1. Type of Resin

The resin is a key component in ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of gravel bonded driveways. We recommend choosing UV-resistant resin. Although non-UV resin is cheaper, it tends to fade and darken when exposed to sunlight.

2. Size of Resin

A team of three typically takes one day to install a bonded resin driveway covering an area of 70–150m². The size of the area and the level of preparation required can increase or decrease installation time and cost.

3. Shape

Straight-edged rectangular or other simple shapes are easier to install, requiring less time and reducing costs. A well-planned design will result in a stunning resin-bound gravel driveway.

4. Driveway Base

The condition of your base is crucial. If the area where you intend to install a resin stone driveway is uneven or damaged, it must be repaired first. A resin bonded gravel driveway requires a clean and level base. Your chosen installer will assess the condition and advise on the necessary repairs and costs.

5. Resin Bound Driveway Depth

The depth of resin pathways varies. For porches and footpaths, a depth of 15mm is required. However, for driveways that will support vehicles or heavy loads, an 18mm depth is necessary. We recommend comparing quotes based on the depth of resin stone required.

6. The Weather

Weather conditions significantly impact the installation and durability of resin-bound gravel paths. Rainy weather can prevent the resin and aggregates from mixing properly and make installation more challenging. Rain can also damage the surface, so it is best to schedule installation during dry conditions.

7. The Design and Edging

Complex designs, such as geometric patterns, logos, letters, symbols, or multi-coloured aggregates, enhance the visual appeal but also increase installation time and cost.

Similarly, edging features such as setts and beading can enhance the appearance of a resin-bound gravel driveway, but they will also add to the overall cost.

Many people opt for a gravel bonded driveway due to its elegant design and attractive finish. We recommend focusing on quality rather than cost, as a well-installed driveway can significantly enhance the appearance and value of your property.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Resin Bound Gravel Driveway

Now that you understand the factors that influence cost, let’s explore the pros and cons to help you make an informed decision.

Advantages of Resin Driveways

In addition to their eye-catching appearance, resin-bound gravel paths offer several other benefits:

1. Affordable
The installation cost, typically between £50 and £80 per m², is reasonable. Costs can be further reduced if the resin is applied over an existing driveway.

2. Easy to Install and Maintain
Resin bonded driveway installation is among the fastest paving methods. If the base is already prepared, the resin-aggregate mixture can be applied quickly, reducing installation time. However, if groundwork repairs are required, installation may take up to a week.

Maintenance is straightforward—simply pressure wash the surface twice a year. Unlike loose stone driveways, there is no need to replace displaced stones.

3. Durable and Flexible
Resin bonded gravel driveways are both durable and flexible. High-quality materials extend the lifespan of the surface, while its flexibility helps prevent damage from heavy loads.

4. Environmentally Friendly and Increases Property Value
The attractive appearance of a gravel bonded driveway can enhance kerb appeal and increase property value. Additionally, the porous nature of resin-bound pathways makes them an environmentally friendly choice.

Disadvantages of Resin Driveways

Despite their many benefits, resin-bound driveways also have some drawbacks:

1. Colour Fading
Choosing the right colour for a resin-bound gravel driveway is crucial. It is advisable to seek professional guidance, as some colours may fade over time when exposed to sunlight.

2. Lack of Formal Regulations
There are no formal legal regulations governing resin stone driveways. As a result, you may encounter issues if you hire an unqualified contractor or an unreliable company.

Conclusion

A resin-bound gravel driveway is an aesthetically pleasing addition to any property. However, for the best results, it is essential to hire skilled contractors to carry out the installation.
